Reveal untapped areas of the mind, whether it's your own or your child's. It's said that listening to and playing music, especially critically, use parts the mind that you may not have known you had. Studies, like this one, reveal that children who study music versus those who don't, "performed better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy, verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics and IQ." Another study shows that children who study music are better readers. Also, playing an instrument can offset the effects of mental decline in aging, as explained in this article.

Adult and Youth Rock Band
Many people dabble at an instrument, never having made the transition to ensemble playing. Sometimes it just seems like an inconvenience to get people. Other times it's fear of making a fool of yourself in front of others.
With my student ensembles, nobody's a fool, everyone's a hero! I put together groups of 3 to 5 players where you'll learn to listen to each other rather than have musical tunnel vision, take cues, learn all the standard "band" jargon that we professionals banter about. Interestingly, everyone thinks they've got it together when they're sitting by themselves playing, but trust me, it's different when you're in a group.
Often, we have a "host" home where one of the students makes his garage or den available for the group. Or we can do the same in my home. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and beverages appropriate to the age group; for kids and teens, it's soft drinks. For adults, it's adult beverages if that's what you want.
Ultimately, everyone learns, everyone makes new friends and everyone has fun.
Cost: $60 per student player for a 3-hour session. (Standard lessons cost $60 for one hour.)
