Psycho III
"It's the Cycle of Thirds," said G.
"What's that?
"It's C, E, G, B, D, F, A, C. It can start on any of the letters, like A, C, E, G, B, D, F, A, and it tells you two things:
1. It tells you how chords are made. Chords always have at least 3 letters -- CEG, ACE, BDF -- and so on, always as in the sequence above. The only thing that would be different would be when a chord needs a sharp or flat (called an accidental). A Major chord for instance would be A, C#, E.
2. It tells you the names of the lines and spaces of the musical staff, both the bass staff and the treble staff. The bottom line of the bass staff is G. Therefore the next 4 of all 5 staves are B, D, F, and A, just as the Cycle of Thirds above shows you.
The bottom line of the treble staff is E, so all 5 lines go E, G, B, D, F.
If the top line of the bass staff is A and the bottom line of the treble staff is E, there's something missing. It's the C in between the staves. That C is called middle C."
"So, edgy, beady effacy is E, G, B, D, F, A, C?" asked D. "Then it's not Psycho III, it's a cycle of thirds."
"Correct," said G.
